Samuel Mugarura, commonly known as Falcao the Makerere University student who invented teargas last year has secured a utility certificate from Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB).

The utility certificate was handed over to Mugarura at the URSB headquarters on Wednesday afternoon by the URSB Director for Intellectual Property Mary Kainobwisho and added that the utility certificate means that Mugarura has patented his innovation.

The certificate was issued in accordance with Uganda Industrial Property Act, 2014, section 32(1) that says a utility certificate that guarantees patent of the invention can be granted and issued to the applicant by the registrar.

Kainobwisho explained that Mugarura’s application was scrutinized by Ugandan chemists and African Regional Industrial Property Organisation (ARIPO) chemists who recommended that he should be granted a certificate.
Mugarura is a third year Bachelor of chemistry and botany student at Makerere University.
