A grandmother and two other persons have been arrested in Butaleja district for alleged child trafficking of a 6-year-old boy.

According to police, Sairuna Nabaje, a resident of Nabiganda village in Kachonga sub-county, approached Christopher Kawu and Musa Wanande, both residents of Butaleja town council and attempted to sell her 6-year-old grandson, saying she did not have money to look after him.

Bukedi regional police spokesperson, Sowali Kamulya says the trio has been arrested for child trafficking.

According to Kamulya, the grandmother Nabaje approached Kawu and Wanande looking for someone to buy the six-year-old boy.

Nabaje reportedly claimed that the boy’s mother, Maureen Nasali left for Kampala three years back leaving her in charge of the minor.

Kamulya says Kawu and Wanande also approached another person only identified as Mugaga Muto and briefed him about the ‘deal’.

Police says that Mugaga turned down the offer, saying he didn’t have money and instead offered to get them another ‘buyer’.

Mugaga reported the matter to police leading to the arrest of the trio. The suspects are currently in custody at Butaleja Central Police Station on child trafficking charges and are expected to appear in court anytime.

Our reporter was unable to establish how much Nabaje was selling her grandson and what she expected the buyer to do with the minor.

Some of these minors end up as victims of child sacrifice.
