Kirumira hunted because of tribalism – Besigye

Dr. Kiiza Besigye

Opposition’s Dr. Kiiza Besigye has decried the manner in which issues in the Uganda Police force is being handled.

While giving a comment on the unfortunate and dramatic arrest of former Buyende District Police Commander ASP Muhammad Kirumira, Besigye noted that there are a number of injustices several people are facing in the force.

He added that all the police has embarked on is encouraging tribalism.

He says its unfair for Kirumira one of the few placed officers from the central to be suspended by a Westerner and be replaced by another Westerner.

It should be noted that yesterday the Uganda police force appointed ASP Edgar Akankwasa to take over the duties of ASP Muhammad Kirumira as the new district police commander for Buyende district.

Kirumira is being charged with six counts; torture, unlawful arrests, corruption, bribery, extortion and excessive use of authority.

The counts were read to him by the police prosecutor, SSP Catherine Kusemererwa for offences he allegedly committed when he was in-charge of Nansana Police Station and Old Kampala as division police commander in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

However, Kirumira who had become a darling cop for his ruthless hunt for criminals in Kampala had questioned the manner in which he has charged for the same old counts that where levied on him since 2010.

Kirumira thinks that there is something ‘fishy’ in these fresh charges questioning further why he is being charged now. He also questions why he is not taken to criminal court, but rather a disciplinary court.
