South Sudan: Gunmen ambush Vice President’s military escort on Juba-Bor road

A convoy of military escort for South Sudan’s First Vice President Taban Deng Gai was ambushed by unknown gunmen at Sudan-Safari area along the Juba-Bor road today morning, wounding three soldiers.

The military convoy was travelling from Juba to Bor ahead of Taban Deng’s delegation.

“We were informed about the ambush, so we jump off the vehicles and tried to take positions but they (attackers) kept shooting at us and wounded three soldiers among us,” a soldier among the military escort told Radio Tamazuj.

Meanwhile, several eyewitnesses said the three wounded soldiers arrived in Bor airport around 11:54 am. They explained that one soldier was shot is shot in the foot and another was shot in the neck, while the third soldier was shot in the arm.

They pointed out that the wounded were wrapped in bondages and were bleeding, adding that the wounded soldiers were in a military ambulance, but they were airlifted back to Juba for treatment.

Radio Tamazuj couldn’t reach SPLA officials to comment on the incident.

Separately, a high-level government delegation led by First Vice President Taban Deng is expected to travel to Bor town by air today. The delegation was tasked to find amicable solutions to the ongoing conflict between Jonglei and Boma states.
