Over 1 Billion lost in election petitions

Government has lost over 1 billion shillings in over 100 petitions filled in courts of law by says Joseph Sewungu the MP for Kalungu as he seeks to Amend the Electoral Commission Act that gives the president authority of vetting the EC commissioners including its Chairperson.

Sewungu adds that People must apply for the various posts in the electoral commission body and later be approved by the parliament not head picking as it is done.

Petitions filed in high courts are as a result of returning officers’ mistakes including wrong tallying of the results, smuggling in declaration forms and shunning announcing propriety winners of the election.

While citing an example of the kyadondo East by election which resulted from EC’s failure to observe electoral laws among others, Joseph has vowed to spear head the amendment of the act
