South Sudan: Gunmen kidnap five civilians

South Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) national army soldiers patrol the streets with a pick-up truck after capturing the town of Bentiu, on January 12, 2014.

Gunmen have kidnapped five people in Duk Payuel County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State on Monday evening, a local official said.

Jonglei’s Minister of Information, Jacob Akec, told Radio Tamazuj today that a man and four women were intercepted by unknown gunmen between Duk Payuel and Poktap on Monday evening.

“We don’t know their whereabouts but one person who was with them escaped and came. He has informed people in Poktap that armed youth from Murle attacked them on the road and abducted five people,” said Akec.

The state minister further said police forces had launched a major operation in the area to safely recover the abducted civilians, but could not succeed.
