The Kampala City Lord mayor Elias Lukwago has called upon govern to re consider providing everlasting solutions for the street vendors.
Speaking while appearing on Bukedde Television, Lukwago adds that there must be a formula for harmonious co-existence of the rich and the poor.
“Much as there must be some order, the authority at city hall recognizes street vendors, hawkers and shop traders. Therefore, there must be a formula for harmonious co-existence of the rich and the poor.” He said.
He added that In the meantime, Vendors should continue working on the gazetted streets which were passed by council as the council works out a long-term solution of building for them markets.
“As we are all aware, the sitting government has not allocated funds to cater for the urban poor but that’s one of the things we are advocating for not chasing them up and down as they not Ugandans.” Lukwago added.
Yesterday the Kampla city Minister Hon. Betty Kamya has finally secured police backup for the city Council law enforcement team that creates order in the city including arresting street vendors.
This follows the controversial death of a woman hawker who was allegedly chased by KCCA enforcement team generating public outcry.
