President Yoweri Katuta Museveni has ordered for the immediate takeover of Mountains of the Moon and Busoga University, Private owned universities which have been stumbling with academic and financial challenges.
In a statement issued to the Minster of Education Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, president highlights that this has been done in good faith to save the students and the education sector.
He adds that private proprietors have continuously failed to manage the institutions since they mistake them to be run like secondary and primary schools thus their collapse.
“I am writing to direct you to take over two private universities which some of our people acting in good faith, started many years ago. The two universities are Mountains of the Moon and Busoga University,” reads Museveni’s letter.
This directive follows the recent successful takeover of Kabaale University that was for a while been constrained with administrative and financial challenges that have of late become history.
President adds that if government remains mute on these issues, the challenge of putting the education standards and future of students at stake will be on the hype.
He also notes that given the popularity of university education, government has established public universities in West Nile, Lango, Teso, Ankole, Kabale, Acholi and Bukedi and that there are plans to establish more in Bugisu, Sebei, Masaka, Bunyoro, Mubende and Karamonja.
Last year, the management of Mountains of the Moon University applied to government to take it over and turn it into a public university. The private institution located in Fort Portal, was established in 2005 by a team of eminent people from Tooro region, as a community university.
