Justice and constitutional affairs Minister Kahinda Otafiire has called upon government to relocate the National detention Luzira Prison.
Speaking while appearing before the parliamentary committee this afternoon, Kahinda said that the facility should not be located in the capital city and that issues of congestion can best be addressed by building another spacious facility.
This call comes at a time while the Uganda prison services is suffocated with the problem of congestion of inmates.
This problem starts straight from the courts of law that take years to complete case hearings resulting into case backlog and congestion of detention centers.
The court census report of last year established that there are 37,827 backlogged cases in the judicial system, a figure that is alarming.
