Government has this morning threatened to withdraw operating licenses of some telecommunication companies that registered sim cards with wrong information.
Speaking to the Media at media center, the Minster of ICT and National Guidance Hon. Frank Tumwebaze said its unbelievable that regardless of the directive to have all unregistered simcards switched, some companies have unrealistically kept them on.
Tumwebaze added that those companies found to have violated government’s policy of having all simcards registered with the use of national identity cards for nationals shall be severely punished thereby giving Uganda communications commission (UCC) 14 days within which to complete investigations into how some alleged Airtel numbers were got with wrong or forged identities by suspected criminals.
The directive follows security concerns that unscrupulous people obtained unregistered simcards to commit crimes in the country.
