The Leader of the Opposition, Hon Winfred Kiiza calls for political tolerance among the Members of Parliament if the country is to overcome the challenges it is facing.
Winfred Kiiza made this call while meeting with her counterpart Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Upper House in the Parliament of India on Tuesday, 06 March 2018.
The Leader of the Opposition had just attended a plenary sitting where she witnessed protests by Members across the political divide in both the Upper and Lower Houses of the Parliament of India.
“It is interesting to note that Speakers of both Houses exercised utmost restraint as Members protested against budgetary inequality concerns, affirmative action for minority communities and fraud in the banking sector which had an adverse impact on the Indian economy,” Winfred Kiiza said.
Ghulam added that intolerance of dissenting opinions by any government is recipe for disconnect with its citizens.
“Tolerance is key to growth of any democracy and effective representation of citizens interests,” Ghulam said.
Ghulam appreciated the engagement as a sign of continued relations between the Parliaments of India and Uganda.
The Ugandan Parliamentary delegation is in India on a study visit focusing on effective representation in Parliament. The visit is also meant for legislative reflection and improvement in exercising democratic rights, representation of citizens’ views and resource allocation.
The Leader of the Opposition is accompanied by Hon Roland Mugume and Florence Namayanja.
