The Uganda Police Force has cautioned citizens to be keen when purchasing goods and commodities for consumption following the discovery of various duplicated products in circulation during a recent ‘OPERATION FAGIA’.
The operation was jointly conducted last week by Interpol Uganda, Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Uganda Registration Bureau Services (URSB)
and Anti -Counterfeit Network as a result of aggrieved members of the business community citing numerous counterfeits and duplicated goods flooding the markets hence affecting their businesses.
The Director Interpol and International Relations Uganda Police AIGP. Yiga Fred said that a number of fake products including macaronis (spaghetti), televisions, oil lubricants, mattresses,Gillette products,pirated books and memory sticks were confiscated.
“There has been a problem of counterfeit goods on the market,some made in Uganda and supplied in the surrounding countries. This is one reason why we joined hands with various organisations, company owners and other stake holders to fight this vice,” Yiga said.
Director Legal and Corporate Affairs at Anti -Counterfeit Network Mr. Fred Muwema called upon brand owners to protect the consumers from fake products by sensitising the public about the presence of counterfeits on the market and how to detect them.
He also stressed the need for sensitization of customs officers on dangers of counterfeits flooding the markets other than collecting taxes from such goods.
