2nd May will become another historic day for the Rukungiri residents as different candidates get nominated for the highly anticipated woman MP position.
This even, brought different opposition leaders across the country to camp in the district barely a month after it was graced with a mega shs.5 billion ‘handshake’ donation from the Head of State.
The nomination of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Woman Candidate Betty Muzanira to run for the parliamentary seat, painted Rukungiri town “Blue-Red” and hundreds danced to the famous Toka Kwa Barabara campaign song.
She was escorted by former presidential Candidate and son of the soil Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Kampala Mayor Elias Lukwago, Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), leader of opposition Hon. Winfred Kizza among others.
The position of the district woman MP fell vacant on March 22, 2018 when the Court of Appeal nullified the 2016 parliamentary results of NRM’s Winfred Matsiko.
This followed a successful petition by her rival of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Betty Muzanira. Muzanira noted that there were a number of irregularities in the election especially in the sub-counties of Nyakagyeme, Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje.
