Police in Rwenzori Region have launched operations to root out criminal gangs that have been terrorising the area and a few of their neighboring districts.
Rwenzori Regional Police Commander SSP. Caesar Tusingwiire confirmed yesterday that around 7am, joint security operations were conducted against suspected criminals camping and hiding in mountains of Kisinga, Nyakiyumbu and Kyondo subcounties under Bwera Division, Kasese District.
Over eight suspects were arrested and as a result, unknown thugs abandoned an unmarked SMG gun loaded with 5 rounds at a verandah of the area councilor Mr. Janolesi Muhindo Muthubya of a village called Kyabisoro,Rwakirema parish.
SSP. Tusingwiire said fingerprints have been lifted from the recovered gun and submitted to the forensic lab for investigations to identify users if the owners are linked to any offences.
“It is pleasing to see a firearm recovered and removed from our areas, and we will be working to establish if it is linked to any recent incidents in our region or elsewhere. Every gun we recover could be a weapon used to cause fear, intimidation or harm to the people of Uganda.”
He added, “this means we have neutralized its potential to cause serious fear and risks to people in the area.”
