The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has asked Local Council Chairpersons in Kamuli district to uplift the quality of education in government aided schools, citing the district’s poor performance in national exams.
Kadaga said there are various primary schools in the district that have not had pupils in first grade for over 20 years.
“Last week I was in my village and found out Mbulamuti Primary School, which used to perform well has not scored any first grade for the past eighteen years,” she said.
Kadaga was speaking at a ceremony at which HUAWEI handed over two printing machines, 500 hoes and 70 bicycles to Kamuli district.
“I am wondering what happened to government schools because I know there are many other schools which have never had any first grades,” Kadaga added.
She was displeased on discovering that private schools with poor living conditions performed better than government schools that are better facilitated.
She cited Kasambira Primary School housed in a wooden structure which had 11 pupils in first grade, while government schools in good buildings, with paid teachers and library could not score first grades.
Kadaga urged LCIII Chairpersons to plan and monitor the performance of government aided schools in their respective areas.
“I want you Chairperson LCIIIs to find a solution to the problems in government schools,” Kadaga said.
According to Kadaga, students in candidate classes will be subjected to routine tests and a ‘Busoga examination’ before the national examinations.
The Public Relation Manager HUAWEI Uganda, Lina Cao, announced the company’s commitment to supporting education in Busoga sub region saying the two printing machines will reduce costs of printing routine tests and exams. This is in line with a campaign to uplift education in the sub region that is spearheaded by the Speaker.
