Kampala Metropolitan Police has arrested over 1355 suspected criminals during a sting operation aimed at sweeping ‘kifeesi’ criminals off the streets.
The operations in all divisions were sanctioned by the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander CP. Moses Kafeero Kabugo in conjunction with his deputy ACP. Denis Namuwoza. This comes as a result of public out cry about some areas of the city being impassable and unsafe.
The suspects arrested are accused of mugging people, general thefts vandalism on streets and in traffic jam, drug abuse in most suburbs,and disorganising and disrupting the public during peak hours.
A number of items were recovered which include bags, phones, marijuana, TVs, Radios, woofers,master keys, drugs,breaking implements, pangas, knives, motorvehicle parts,jewellery among other items.
The operations were carried out around areas of Katwe Division, Kasangati Division, Old Kampala Division, Jinja Road Division, Mukono Division, Nagalama Division, Kira Road Division, Kira Division, Kakiri Division, Nansana Division, Nsangi Division, Entebbe Division,Kajjansi Division, Kabalagala Division, Wandegeya Division, CPS Kampala Division Kawempe Division and Wakiso Division.
The suspects this morning were subjected to screening before responsible citizens, elders, local area leaders, 436 were arraigned before courts of law, remanded to different prison facilities till 14 July 2018 while the rest are pending court next week.
The Commander Kampala Metropolitan Police thanked all local leaders, the entire community for volunteering spot on intelligence led information about various key black spots in Kampala and it surroundings.
“These operations are to be carried on till the people in Kampala have a feel of relative peace and safety,” CP. Kafeero said.
