Sixteen supporters of Jeema candidate in the Bugiri municipality elections, Asuman Basalirwa, have been arrested on Wednesday morning arrested from Planet Hotel in Bugiri Town.
The arrest occurred after both Mr. Basalirwa and Kyadondo East Member of Parliament (MP), Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine announced that security officers had surrounded the hotels in which they had spent Tuesday night.
Currently, the group has been detained in Bugiri Police Station while others were reportedly transferred to Iganga and Bugiri police stations.
Hamid Kyamundu, the Jema spokesperson said that the raid took place early morning at 2;00am. He however denied the arrest of Basalirwa and Bobi Wine who were evidently missing at the press conference.
“Bobi Wine is at Basalirwa’s home from where they will come and address his last campaign rally at Bugiri Bus Park,” Mr Kyamundu said.
However, Police says that the arrrestested supporters were found with dangerous machines and fuel aimed to harm the voters an allegation which Basalirwa has refused.
“These people were found in the hotel sleeping. I do not know how they can be having the paraffin and the machines in their sleep,” defended Basalirwa.
It should be noted that Hon. Kyagulanyi, Besigye and Museveni will be in Bugiri o campaign for their candidates as these are the last campaigns ahead of the by-election to be held on Friday, 25th, July 2018.
