President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has this evening issued another statement to the Bazukulu in regard to the ongoing situation in Uganda especially the arrest of opposition leaders.
According the release, Museveni made it clear that he has no powers to free people on Remand.
“On the issue of releasing the people on remand, it is only the Courts or the DPP that can cause the freeing of these people thereby saying that the President can only come after the trial and convictions.” Museveni stated.
He added that the President can exercise the prerogative of mercy. Before that the President is not empowered to do anything.
This has come at a time when calls from both local and international activists demand for unconditional release of Kyadondo East Lawmaker Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu who was brought yesterday before Gulu magistrates court and charged with treason.
