Officers patrolled the notorious Walking Street - where hundreds of scantily clad girls tout their services all hours of the day and night - and said they observed dozens of women from Uganda and Madasgcar vying for custom from tourists. They were rounded up in police vans and marched to the local station to have their details taken as police renewed efforts to change the sleazy resort into a family-friendly area. Several brothels and nightclubs have been raided and officers are now targeting International sex workers who arrive to work illegally from Africa. The notorius city has been likened to the Wild West - with prostitutes from around the world flocking there similar to the frontier Gold Rush in the 19th century. But the notorious tourist hotspot has caused controversy in recent weeks after a series of lurid stories exposing the ‘’modern day Sodom and Gomorrah’’. The Thai PM has personally ordered a crackdown and government chiefs have been scrambling to change the image. Police chief Netithorn Ratanasuchanan, who led the latest raid in the early hours of this morning, said they were specifically looking for ''women of colour'' and found that most of the women the captured were from Madagascar and Uganda. He said the women were all taken down to the police station for questioning and all of their passport details and other personal documents were noted as evidence. All of the women strongly denied any claims of prostitution but police said that after observing their behavior beforehand, they were confident that they were in fact selling themselves for money.
