MP Who Supports Wife Battering Finally Marries

MP Twinamasiko on Saturday wedded his wife Florence Kyarikunda at Damasiko Parish Church of Uganda

The MP who turned ‘famous’ for supporting wife beating in marriages has finally wedded.

Bugangaizi East Member of Parliament, Onesmus Twinamasiko on Saturday wedded his wife Florence Kyarikunda at Damasiko Parish Church of Uganda in Kyekado village in Kakumiro district.

The ceremony was graced by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and several other MPs such as junior finance minister David Bahati who was the groom’s best-man, Robinah Nabbanja, Ruth Nankabirwa, Mwine Mpaka, Thomas Tayebwa and others.

The MP faced the wrath of the public last year on March 09, a day after the International Women’s Day celebrations, when he took to the media and backed men to beat their wives saying, “As a man you need to discipline your wife. You need to touch her a bit, tackle and beat her somehow to streamline her.”

However, pressure was mounted on the MP and was forced to make a personal statement on the floor of Parliament in defense. This was after Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga ordered Parliamentary committee on Rules, Discipline and Privileges to investigate the MP.

In his statement, the MP apologized to Ugandans for his utterances adding that the beating he meant is not the beating that the public perceived.

“For the avoidance of doubt, may I at the onset affirm my highest respect for the dignity of women, and my unwavering faith in the inviolability of women. I actually detest all forms of violence against women,” Twinamasiko said.

He added, “The beating I meant was not the normal beating, I meant the other beating.”
