Kalungu’s stanch opposition lawmaker Hon. Joseph Ssewungu has Challenged the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe to stop taking his fellows for Granted.
Nawangwe together with a delegation from the Ivory tower were appearing before the parliament Committee on education to answer queries on the recent strike at the University and the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga’s concerns on gender inequality in the recent appointments to the University board.
However on discussing about the strike issue, Hon. Ssewungu noted that Prof Nawangwe should stop being ignorant, intimidating and suspending staff without any justification.
“I advise the VC to just resign because he has failed to solve the problems of Makerere.” Ssewungu a veteran academician said.
It should be noted that Last week, the Head of State giving green light to the Vice Chancellor Pro. Barnabas Nawangwe to intensively reign on the indisciplined lecturers.
President Yoweri Museveni said he is firmly behind the Makerere University administrations’ efforts to restore discipline to one of Uganda’s Highest and greatest institution of learning.
“Nawangwe is an Engineer, a professor of Technology and wants to restore discipline to this institution. People want to continue with buyayesism. Imagine a professor who stripes naked and is cheered on. Makerere is a centre of study not stupidity. I am firmly behind him,” the President said.
The conflict between the University administration and its academic staff follows the suspension of various lecturers for misconduct, indiscipline and involvement in acts that breach the terms and conditions of their employment.
