Kawempe South law maker Mubarak Munyagwa has chaired his first session of the Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) as he led the committee in interrogating the conduct of the tax body, Uganda Revenue Authority.
Parliament’s COSASE resumed business today (Tuesday) under the stewardship of the new chairman Mubarak Munyagwa and their first interface was with the Uganda Revenue Authority officials led by Commissioner General Doris Akol over the 2013/2014 Auditor General’s report. The report queried the increasing tax arrears as well as government loss of millions of shillings worth of impounded fuel from Fuelex 9000 liters of it missing.
Under the lead counsel of Paul
Mwiru, Jinja East Municipality MP, COSASE grilled URA officials to account for
the missing fuel that was impounded by the tax body. John Imaniraguha, director of two fuel stations; Planet Fuel Station
and Fuelex Petrol Station, was arrested over smuggling fuel where he was being
pursued by URA and described as a “fugitive fuel smuggler”.
COSASE also directed that URA presents before
it a comprehensive schedule of all debtors that have failed to honour their tax
obligations.
