“We are here to celebrate the spirit of giving. Rotary is all about sacrifice so that the less privileged can benefit and bring hope to the community. That is what we have witnessed here today”.
The Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah said this while commissioning a maternity ward and theatre at Freda Carr Hospital in Ngora District on Saturday, 31 August 2019.
Oulanyah, a Rotarian and Major Donor level 2 said people should follow what the Bible talks about, doing good for the less privileged as it is to God himself.
“We give not because we have a lot but because we feel in our hearts that someone else deserves the little you have more than you do,” he added.
The medical superintendent, Dr. Amos Odiit was grateful for the transformation of the hospital but appealled for more staff.
“We are grateful for this achievement. We still lack medical personnel. Currently we have 110 staff; three medical doctors; three clinical officers; one radiographer; 17 nurses; eight midwives the rest are tutors, clinical instructors and support staff. We request government to increase these numbers so that we utilise these facilities well,” he said.
Odiit added that the people in Ngora are grateful for the support that the Rotary Club of Kampala Central in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs in the United Kingdom have offered. The President Rotary Club of Kampala Central, Charles Kizza Lwanga, said the shs750 million project started in 2017 and was happy that it was finally commissioned.
“The refurbishment of these wards, training of midwives and nurses, the construction of 1,500 litre water tanks and provision of basic equipment for the two wards will see the services at the hospital improve and lives will be saved,” he said.
The area Member of Parliament, Hon. David Abala, was happy with the management of the hospital for treating people well and warned them against stealing the medication.
“I thank Dr. Odiit who has stopped strikes that were the order of the day in 2007. He has brought hope back to the people of Ngora and with this facelift, I am sure he will do more. I also warn the nurses not to take the medicine from this hospital; it’s for the patients and not the medical personnel,” he said.
Freda Carr Hospital was founded in 1922 by the Church Missionary Society and operates as a private-not-for-profit health institution.
The function was also attended by the Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Jacquline Amongin, the Rotary District Governor, Xavier Sentamu; Assistant District Governor, Joseph Nuwamanya; Rotary Country Chair Emmanuel Taniko, the Rotary funds grants chair, Eng. James Nkooka among others.
