Kawempe North MP-elect Mohammed Segirinya was yesterday remanded to Kitalya Prison for participating in a protest seeking for immediate release of all detained National Unity Platform (NUP) members.
Segirinya, aka Mr Update, appeared before Buganda road grade one Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu on Tuesday, 23 March 2021 following his arrest on Monday.
The charges of inciting violence were read to him by the court but he denied them before he was remanded.
On Monday, Ssegirinya and others arrived at Mini price in Kampala, holding placards bearing messages demanding the release of the detained party supporters. Police led by the OC Mini Price ASP, Flavia Musiimenta, intercepted them and arrested them.
Last week, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was arrested as he led a peaceful demonstration demanding the release of hundreds of his supporters who are missing after they were arrested during and after the January 14 elections.
The arrests of civilians, mainly supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party, began during the electioneering period, with many of the individuals picked by plain-clothed armed operatives who sped with them in vans, nicknamed Drone for their speed, to unknown locations.
According to government, majority of the missing persons are being held by various security agencies including the elite Special Forces Command(SFC) which guards President Museveni is holding 51 out 177 Ugandans who were premised missing .But the Opposition National Unity Platform(NUP) insists those who went missing are 680 and many are languishing in military custody.
