Police in Kampala are investigating a case in which a boda boda cyclist in Katwe, was reportedly lynched for allegedly stabbing a police officer enforcing Covid-19 rules.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire said the unknown cyclist attacked and stabbed police constable Ismail Menjah, who was on duty enforcing the curfew rules on Friday evening.
Trouble started when the police officer impounded the cyclist’s motorbike number at Kibuye road junction along Entebbe road.
“The rider turned violent demanding for his motorcycle and stabbed the officer several times in the stomach and chest. The officer sustained more injuries on the elbow and neck,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
During the scuffle, one of the locals identified as Masuddi sustained injuries on the head as he tried to intervene, according to police.
ASP Owoyesigyire said Menjah was rushed to Malcom medical centre for first aid.
He was later transferred to the Iran-Ugandan Hospital at Naguru in a critical condition.
When the police officers returned to the scene after rushing their colleague to the hospital, they found the rider dead.
ASP Owoyesigyire said he had been killed by pedestrians and other cyclists.
Police said the knife that was used to stab Menjah was recovered at the scene.
Following the outbreak of the covid-19, boda boda riders were directed to stop operating at 6 pm as measures to contain the surging cases of the virus. They are also supposed to carry one passenger.
However, several cyclists continue to flout the rules and as such, police have impounded hundreds of motorbikes in different parts of the country as they enforce the presidential directives.
