Be Serious, You can’t Open Lodges and Close Churches – Opposition Stings Museveni

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has castigated the government for deliberately keeping schools closed while other sectors progress.

Speaking during the press conference, the party secretary General Gerald Siranda stated that is extremely unbelievable have President Museveni can close churches and leave lodges open.

“You are taking our country from God as our motto ‘For God and My Country’ stipulates, this is the time when Uganda needs God More but you have deliberately opened lodges instead, shame on you.” Siranda retaliated.

This comment came following the Forum for Democratic Change party-FDC’s take on the state events occurring in the country.

Speaking at the FDC headquarters in Najjankumbi on Monday afternoon, deputy secretary-general Harold Kaija says instead of the government focusing on covid19 vaccination for teachers it’s instead prioritizing security.

He explains ‘‘I was shocked to hear that schools can’t open but the recruitment of soldiers is happening. I saw the first son (Muhoozi Kainerugaba) advertise that they are recruiting 2000 soldiers, but when they are recruiting they will invite 1000 people, because if you can have those people to recruit 2000, why should our children not go to school?”

Kaija expressed worry that if vaccination is not prioritized, institutions of learning will stay closed until January 2022 and beyond.

He says the rate of vaccination is dragging and few teachers compared to the recommended numbers have been vaccinated.

‘‘Today, how many teachers have been immunized? they used to report the coming of vaccines, they stopped, are vaccines coming, are they there, I have passed at a few health centers ,I have not seen the queues of people waiting to be vaccinated, because we might even think of January and go to January and they start this thing of 3 weeks, press releases of Covid show that cases are going up, so someone telling you January, might be April.”

Eighteen months since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Uganda, the country’s schools remain largely closed, trapping at home some 15 million learners and leaving parents in a dilemma.

The government has called for calm following the continued closure of educational institutions in the country due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Reopening schools without sufficient vaccination of teachers and learners would be catastrophic, said Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni in a statement issued late on Monday.
