Arsene Wenger has insisted that his new World Cup proposals will be good for fans all over the world.
The legendary Arsenal manager is currently FIFA’s chief of global football development and recently proposed the idea of a World Cup being hosted every two years.
The tournament is currently hosted every four years and is next set to be staged in Qatar at the end of 2022, before the 2026 event is hosted across the United States of America, Canada and Mexico – similar to the staging of Euro 2020.
It’s an idea that’s certainly had a mixed response, and UEFA even hit back at FIFA for campaigning the idea without proper consultation of the relevant stakeholders.
Although Wenger is renowned as a legend of the sport, especially at Arsenal, he is risking part of his reputation by proposing these new ideas, and some people may end up blaming him for it long-term if it all goes wrong.
When asked why he is meddling with the game’s best loved competition in an interview with BBC Sport, Wenger replied: “Until now, club football is 80%, national team football is 20% and I want to keep that balance.
