The minister for Agriculture Animal industry and fisheries Hon Odoa Hellen has warned officials at the Uganda- Congo border Mpondwe-Lhubiriha against engaging in illegal trans-border fish exportation.
This followed reports that some of the officials at the border post were fueling illegal fishing along Ugandan waters for the purpose of business at the border town.
Speaking at the Uganda-Congo border in Bukonzo west constituency where she was presiding over the re-opening of the fish trade at Mpondwe border point which was closed by government last year following the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Hon Hellen said many of the economic sectors were greatly affected by the covid-19 pandemic hailing the people in the fish business for being patient.
She ordered the officials at the border post to ensure offloading of cargo should always be done at the border and also allow Congolese to legally cross over to Uganda to transact business in order for the Ugandans to get employment.
Mumbere Ismail, one of the fish dealers at the border post, hailed the government for re-opening the fish business arguing that some Ugandans had died while attempting to cross river Rubiriha to access fish markets in the democratic republic of Congo (DRC).
