Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of Land Forces of the UPDF has announced he is retiring from the national army.
“After 28 years of service in my glorious military, the greatest military in the world, I am happy to announce my retirement,” Muhoozi announced on social media on Tuesday.
“Me and my soldiers have achieved so much! I have only love and respect for all those great men and women that achieve greatness for Uganda everyday.”
The UPDF was yet to comment on the development and whether all requirements for retirement were met.
However, once confirmed, the announcement will reinforce speculations about the General’s political ambitions, which have been in the public domain for 10 years.
The First Son, now a Lieutenant General in the army has served twice as Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), an elite unit of the army charged with protecting the President and his family.
He was also appointed President Yoweri Museveni’s adviser on special operations, a position he still holds.
In this role, Muhoozi has played a central role in the negotiations to iron out the diplomatic stand off between Uganda and Rwanda, which led to the closure of the border for three years.
The Katuna border was eventually reopened yesterday.
