The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo started off with a bang on Thursday night, as guests gathered at Speke Resort Munyonyo located along the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest water body for a dazzling cultural wear-themed welcome dinner.
The event attended by over 5000 hosted buyers and guests from around the world, were treated to a catalogue flair-packed occasion showcasing the beauty and diversity of Uganda’s unique offerings.
The Chief Guest was the Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Jesca Alupo, who added a touch of elegance to the evening with her awesome African print ‘Kitenge’ outfit. She was accompanied by Hon. Tom Butime, the Minister of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Martine Mugarra, the State Minister for Tourism, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro the State Minister for Minerals and the host ministry’s vigorous Permanent Secretary Doreen Katusiime.
The picturesque setting straight from the gate, the cultural dances by the endowed Crane Performers and the Live band session set an urban ascent for a night of celebration and appreciation of Uganda’s natural wonders.
Running under the theme of ‘Responsible Tourism’, the expo aims to highlight the importance of sustainable tourism practices in preserving the country’s environment and supporting local communities.
In her opening remarks, the CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board, Dr. Lilly Ajarova, emphasized the need for responsible tourism to ensure the long-term sustainability of Uganda’s tourism industry.
“The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) is our signature tourism event organized by Uganda Tourism Board, in collaboration with other stakeholders that include the government of Uganda, different ministries and agencies, developmental partners, and the private sector players. For the eighth time, Uganda doors open to 70 hosted buyers and over 5000 trade visitors.” Ajarova.
With a packed schedule of conferences, networking events, exhibitions, and presentations, the expo promises to showcase the best of Uganda’s attractions, from its diverse wildlife to its rich cultural heritage.
