Africhorus Baptist Wins Equity Bank Sponsored Martyrs Choir Competition

Africhorus Baptist High School made history Friday 31st May by winning the esteemed Equity Bank Sponsored Martyrs Choir Competition during the awards night at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

This competition, brought together talented choirs from various religious intuitions both from the Anglican and Catholic faith.

By close of business, the Kitebi based choir dazzled the judges and audience with their harmonious voices and impeccable performance defeating Terego’s St. Aloysius choir Orivu and Cherubim Chamber choir.

The choir’s powerful rendition of traditional renowned hymns and their ability to connect with the audience impressed the judges led by Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemerire earned them the top prize, worth 10 million Uganda Shillings.

Speaking on behalf of Vision Group, the Deputy Managing Director, Gervase Ndyanabo revealed that the competition attracted a total number of 93 choirs from across the country, and he was happy that this number had gone down to only three choirs both from the Catholic and Anglican side.

Today we are down to six choirs: three Anglican and three Catholic. 93 choirs from across the country submitted entries for the competition.

Elizabeth Mwerinde Kasedde, Equity Bank Executive Director, congratulated Africhorus Baptist High School on their well-deserved win and commended the school for their dedication to excellence in music and performance.

The competition served as a platform for talented young singers to showcase their skills and passion for music, and Africhorus Baptist High School emerged as true champions in every sense of the word.

While handing over the bank’s sponsorship package worth 30 million UGX earlier in the week, Equity Bank Managing Director Anthony Kituuka, said revealed that the move was done commemorating the upcoming Martyrs Day.

“Thank you for choosing us as one of your partners, we are excited to collaborate with an organization whose vision aligns with our own and we look forward to making the Martyrs Choir Competition even bigger next year.” Kituuka said.

Don Wanyama, the Vision Group Chief Executive Officer hailed Equity Bank for its generosity and support towards the competition.

“I would like to appreciate Equity bank for choosing to come on as sponsors for the Martyrs Choir Competition at its infancy, we are glad you saw the value and the bigger picture and we know with your support this will become something even bigger.” Wanyama said.
