Equity Bank Uganda is taking big steps to strengthen its footprint in greening Uganda this World Environment Day.
With this year’s theme; “Ecosystem Restoration,” the bank is committed to making a positive impact on the environment and the community. From planting trees to promoting sustainable practices, Equity Bank is dedicated to making a difference in Uganda.
In October 2023, Equity Bank led by Executive Director Elizabeth Mwerinde Kasedde in partnership with Million Trees International and Kasese District officially launched a tree-planting campaign that will see over 7000 indigenous trees planted across the district to conserve the environment and combat climate change.
The Kasese Conservation Forestry program is starting with 50 acres of land in Mwaro Cell, Rukoki Ward, in Nyamwamba Division offered by Kasese Municipality Council. A total of 7000 indigenous trees like Spathodea, Mahogany, Maesopsis, Afrizelia, Warbugia Ugandensis, Prunus Africanus, Musambya, Terminelia will be grown.
Equity bank also contributed 5 million shillings in support of the conservation program.
According to Mwerinde, One of the bank’s key initiatives is the Greening Uganda campaign, which aims to plant as many trees as possible across the country.
“Through partnerships with local organizations and community groups, Equity Bank is working to restore ecosystems and create a more sustainable future for all. In addition to tree planting, Equity Bank is also focusing on promoting green practices within its own operations. From reducing waste to implementing energy-saving measures, the bank is committed to minimizing its environmental impact and leading by example.” Mwerinde said.
As the world celebrates World Environment Day, Equity Bank is calling on all Ugandans to join in the effort to protect the environment and create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
More efforts being done.
Namulonge Forestation Project
As part of our partnership with Marylouise memorial golf course in Namulonge, Equity Bank launched a greening project that will see over 10,000 trees planted along the golf course. The first trees were planted during the 2023 Naro Golf Open.
Mwiri Tree Planting
Equity Bank in partnership with the Kenya High Commission and Million Trees International also embarked on a tree-planting campaign that will see over 43,000 indigenous trees planted on the slopes of Busoga College Mwiri hill, including 10 acres of orchard.
The project is supported by Equity Bank to the tune of Shs85 million and will run for a period of 2 years.
All these projects are part of the wider Equity Group target to plant 35 million trees across the six countries it operates.
