Mr Anderson Burora, the former Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Rubaga, found himself in hot water after persistent attacks against Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
Detectives arrested Mr Burora at his Nakawa Division home on Monday night, charging him with offences related to disturbing the peace of the Speaker.
Police Confirmation and Charges
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Mr Burora’s detention at the Central Police Station in Kampala, with an expected court appearance today.
However, Mr Owoyesigyire refrained from detailing the specific offences. According to other police sources, the investigation is being conducted by Parliament police following a complaint from the Speaker.
Search of Burora’s Home
Yesterday morning, police officers, including members of the Counter Terrorism Unit, transported Mr Burora from Kira Divisional Police Headquarters, where he spent the night, to his Ntinda home for a search.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that the search, lasting three to four hours, yielded no positive results. Reporters were barred from filming the event.
Charges Under the Computer Misuse Act
Mr Onyango previously informed reporters that Burora was arrested on sanctioned charges of hate speech and malicious information under the amended 2022 Computer Misuse Act.
“He used his X-account, formerly Twitter, to commit these offences, which constitute a legitimate crime against the State. We urge the public to use social media responsibly and not to spread misinformation,” he said.
Transfer to Kampala Central Police Station
Around lunchtime, Mr Burora was transferred to the Kampala Central Police Station (CPS). He spent nearly an hour in the office of the station CID officer, receiving visits from family and friends before being taken to record his statement.
Following the statement recording, access to Mr Burora was restricted, and he is expected to be presented in court today.
Lawyer’s Statement
Speaking to reporters at CPS, one of Burora’s lawyers, Mr David Kamukama, said, “He informed me that the Speaker wants him behind bars due to his anti-corruption campaign against Parliament.
I am perplexed by the Speaker’s actions, arresting someone for speaking out.” Mr Kamukama added, “Police here have stated that they are holding him for his safety, but the complainant is Parliament. We are heading to Parliament to seek access to our client and request a Police Bond.”
