The Uganda Journalists’ Association (UJA) has joined hundreds of Ugandans in mourning the passing of its esteemed former president, Joseph Tamale Mirundi.
Tamale died on Tuesday evening at approximately 11:40 PM at the age of 60. Mirundi, a prominent figure in Ugandan journalism and a senior presidential advisor, leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to press freedom and integrity.
In a heartfelt statement, UJA President Mathias Rukundo expressed the association’s condolences to Mirundi’s family and the broader media community.
“We convey our heartfelt sympathies to the family, the entire media fraternity, and the nation at large, upon the sudden loss of senior journalist Joseph Tamale Mirundi,” Rukundo stated.
Mirundi’s career spanned several decades, during which he held various leadership roles within the UJA, including Vice President from 1991 to 1994, Secretary for Labor from 1994 to 1996, and President from 1998 to 2001. His tenure was marked by a passionate fight against the oppressive Press and Journalist Act, which he argued threatened the foundation of independent journalism in Uganda. He advocated for a free press grounded in truth, reasoning, and freedom of expression.
“Tamale Mirundi is one of the esteemed former UJA Presidents who principally and greatly served the association,” Rukundo added, noting that Mirundi was not only a media icon but also a mentor and teacher to many in the field. “The nation has lost a Media Icon who was an encyclopedia, exceptionally intelligent, a patriot, and a realist through his career.”
Mirundi’s passing leaves a significant void in both the media fraternity and the wider community. His legacy of courage and integrity will continue to inspire journalists as they strive to uphold the values he championed throughout his life.
