The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has officially announced the resumption of hiking activities to the revered Margherita Peak, marking a significant milestone for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers.
The climbing experience had been temporarily halted due to safety concerns; however, UWA has implemented a series of safety enhancements to guarantee hikers’ well-being.
Among the most notable improvements is the newly constructed bridge spanning the crevasse in the Margherita glacier, a critical section of the trail known for its challenging conditions. This bridge, along with additional climbing ropes strategically placed throughout the park in collaboration with local partners, ensures safe passage through difficult areas, enabling hikers to tackle the trail with greater confidence.
“We are thrilled to announce that hiking to Margherita Peak can safely resume. These enhancements not only elevate the safety of our trails but also promise a more enjoyable experience as visitors aim to summit one of Africa’s most iconic peaks.” UWA said in a statement shared this week.
In addition to Margherita Peak, UWA invites explorers to discover the other stunning summits within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, including Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range. Each route offers a unique adventure that showcases the breathtaking beauty and diverse ecosystems of the Rwenzori Mountains.
UWA further reassured the public that rigorous monitoring of the hiking routes will continue to ensure ongoing safety for all visitors adding that regular updates will be provided to keep adventurers informed.
