The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has convened a pivotal meeting today with a consortium of leading Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) at the Protea Hotel in Entebbe, aimed at enhancing collaboration in wildlife conservation efforts across the country.
The gathering brought together representatives from prominent conservation organizations, including the Wildlife Conservation Society, Worldwide Fund for Nature, WildAid, and several others, to discuss strategies for harmonizing efforts in Uganda’s protected areas.
The meeting, characterized by a spirit of partnership, focused on aligning the activities of UWA and the various NGOs to address conservation challenges more cohesively. In his opening remarks, Sam Mwandha, the Executive Director of UWA, emphasized the significance of collective action in achieving shared conservation goals.
“This meeting is important for our conservation efforts. By working closely with our NGO partners, we can leverage their expertise and resources to overcome challenges more effectively,” Mwandha stated.
He underscored UWA’s role as the primary implementing agency responsible for wildlife management in Uganda, urging all partner activities to align with UWA’s strategic plans for effective implementation and monitoring. Mwandha expressed gratitude to the consortium for organizing the meeting and acknowledged their ongoing support, reaffirming UWA’s commitment to strong partnerships that ensure the protection and sustainability of Uganda’s natural heritage.
Dr. Simon Nampindo, Country Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), echoed Mwandha’s sentiments, highlighting the essential role of support in advancing UWA’s conservation initiatives.
“Our collaboration with UWA is essential for the success of conservation initiatives in Uganda. Our collective efforts are more effective and impactful if our support is aligned with UWA’s plans,” Nampindo remarked.
Ivan Tumuhimbise, Country Director for the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), stressed the importance of strategic collaboration.
“Effective conservation requires strong partnerships and collaboration. We will continue to work closely with UWA to support its conservation efforts. We believe that collaboration can enhance our collective impact and address the challenges facing Uganda’s wildlife more effectively,” Tumuhimbise stated.
The consortium, which includes organizations such as WildAid, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Natural Resources Conservation Network, African Wildlife Foundation, and Focused Foundation, aims to establish a framework for enhanced collaboration, streamline communication strategies, and strengthen the alignment of UWA and NGO activities. This initiative is expected to boost the overall effectiveness and impact of conservation efforts across Uganda’s protected areas.
