Four people lost their lives instantly, and six others were seriously injured after a truck, reversing unexpectedly, collided with a taxi on the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Luwero District early Monday morning.
The tragic incident took place around 5 a.m. in Nakazzi Village, within Luwero Town Council, as confirmed by Sam Twiineamazima, the spokesperson for the Savannah region police.
The truck, which has yet to be identified, was heading from Kampala when it struck the driver’s side of a Toyota Hiace taxi travelling from Gulu.
Among those who perished in the accident was 43-year-old Moses Kitata, the taxi driver and a resident of Wobulenzi Town Council in Luwero District.
The identities of the other three victims were still unknown as of Wednesday afternoon.
“We are actively searching for the truck driver responsible for this tragic accident,” Twiineamazima told reporters.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations, while the injured were also receiving treatment at the same facility, according to police.
“After receiving reports of the accident, the police responded immediately, registering a case of fatal accident. Crime scene officers visited the site to document evidence, and statements were recorded from relevant witnesses,” Twiineamazima added.
As of press time, the damaged taxi had been towed to Luwero Central Police Station for further investigation. The police have yet to disclose the exact cause of the accident.
According to the 2023 annual police crime report, an average of 25 people are either murdered or killed in road crashes daily across Uganda.
