The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has entered into a groundbreaking 25-year concession agreement with One Nature Hotels Limited. The agreement, finalized today at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Headquarters in Kampala, paves the way for the development and operation of a luxury lodge at Channel Track, near the famous Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The signing ceremony, presided over by Hon. Tom Butime, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, was attended by various dignitaries, including UWA Chairman Prof. James Kalema and One Nature Hotels Managing Director Eng. Hani Saliba. The partnership marks a pivotal milestone in Uganda’s tourism sector, with One Nature Hotels committing an investment of $10 million for the lodge’s development, alongside an additional $1 million for boat services on the Kazinga Channel.
“This agreement is a testament to the strong and fruitful relationship between Uganda and the United Arab Emirates,” Minister Butime stated, encouraging further investment in Uganda’s protected areas.
Butime further emphasized the importance of such partnerships in promoting sustainable tourism and conservation, which in turn create jobs and uplift local communities.
Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, the Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities spoke onto Uganda’s amazing competitive edge in attracting world-class investments, asserting that this collaboration demonstrates the country’s unique natural assets and commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
“This partnership is a demonstration of how Uganda is leveraging its unique natural assets to attract global investors. Combining luxury tourism with conservation sets a benchmark for sustainable tourism in the region and ensures our protected areas remain vibrant and beneficial to both nature and our people.”
Doreen Katusiime, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism expressed her excitement over the successful culmination of the agreement, noting that it reflects Uganda’s readiness to host global investments and showcases the potential of its tourism sector.
“This development aims to elevate the global reputation of Queen Elizabeth National Park as a premier destination for travelers because the luxury lodge at Channel Track is expected to enhance wildlife viewing and leisure activities on the Kazinga Channel, creating employment opportunities for local communities and boosting tourism revenue.” She said.
Prof. James Kalema underscored the strategic importance of the project for wildlife conservation and tourism in Uganda. He called on investors to prioritize compliance with necessary processes, including Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, and to ensure job creation for local communities.
Eng. Hani Saliba reiterated One Nature Hotels’ commitment to sustainability, stating, “Our vision is to deliver world-class luxury while championing sustainability. This partnership is not just about building a hotel; it’s about creating a legacy.” The lodge will feature eco-friendly infrastructure, adhering to strict sustainability principles to minimize environmental impact.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce President praised the strong ties between Uganda and the UAE, emphasizing the potential for further development and investment in Uganda’s tourism sector. He urged the Ministry to share investment opportunities to attract more visitors and investors.
