The Ugandan entertainment industry is in mourning following the untimely death of Nicholas Mpiirwe Kamagala, known to many as DJ Messe Bontwe.
The renowned comedian and musician passed away in the United States, where he had relocated to seek greater opportunities in the entertainment world.
Messe Bontwe was a trailblazer, co-founding the iconic Amarula Family comedy group in 1999 alongside fellow comedians Amooti Omubalanguzi and the late Paddy Bitama. His wit and comedic genius made him a household name in Uganda, where his impact on the comedy scene was both profound and lasting.
Before making a name for himself in comedy, Messe had a successful musical career as a producer and musician. He was a member of the ‘Hommies Band’ (Abaana be Kka) and achieved fame with the hit song Bamusakata, a collaboration with reggae artist Ragga Dee in 1995. His unique fusion of music and humor earned him respect and adoration across multiple entertainment circles.
The news of his passing came as a shock to his fans and colleagues, with fellow Ugandans in the U.S. confirming his death. Reports indicate that the cause of death was cardiac arrest, which occurred in Arizona, leaving the community stunned and heartbroken.
Elvis Kintu Nsonyi, a former aide to Kampala’s Lord Mayor, shared his condolences, saying, “Our brother Moze Bontwe has rested. Kitalo nnyo! Cause: Cardiac arrest, Arizona!”
