Police in Kajjansi have apprehended Mumbere Brian, alias Natamba, the alleged mastermind behind a wave of motor vehicle number plate thefts.
The arrest has led to the recovery of over 30 stolen plates in an intelligence-driven operation.
Mumbere’s arrest on January 1, 2025, triggered an extensive operation across areas including Zana, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.
Police uncovered 16 hidden number plates, suspected to have been stashed for extortion purposes.
Investigators revealed that Mumbere would hide plates and demand payment from vehicle owners for their return, exploiting victims financially.
Further interrogation disclosed additional hideouts, prompting a collaborative operation on January 4, 2025, by officers from Kajjansi and Nateete Division.
This effort uncovered 15 more plates in Kisigula, Katale, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.
According to police, the suspect is believed to have stolen over 30 number plates within just one month.
“This recovery is a major step in combating number plate theft, a crime with far-reaching implications such as identity theft and the potential misuse of stolen plates,” said Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson.
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of Mumbere’s activities while urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
The recovered plates are expected to be returned to their rightful owners following verification processes.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police emphasized its commitment to addressing such crimes, which not only inconvenience vehicle owners but also pose broader security threats.
