The health condition of Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, has taken a dire turn, with reports indicating he is brain dead, according to a statement from the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala, Mr. Ssenyonyi conveyed the devastating news, urging the public to offer their prayers and support.
“The doctors informed us that Honorable Ssegirinya is brain dead. They explained that all his internal organs have ceased functioning, though a faint pulse remains. They cannot officially declare him deceased due to ethical considerations,” Mr. Ssenyonyi revealed.
“We are asking all Ugandans, especially the people of Kawempe North who elected him, to pray fervently for him in this extremely challenging time.”
The 37-year-old legislator, widely known for his vibrant personality and passionate advocacy for his constituents, is currently receiving treatment at Rubaga Hospital, where medical professionals are working tirelessly to provide care.
Sr. Grace Nanyondo, the acting executive director and medical director of Rubaga Hospital, confirmed that Mr. Ssegirinya’s condition is critical but stopped short of declaring him deceased.
“He is critically sick,” Sr. Nanyondo said in her remarks to the media. “What he needs now is our love, prayers, and support. As medical professionals, we cannot pronounce him dead at this point, but his condition remains extremely delicate.”
Mr. Ssegirinya’s health has been a matter of public concern in recent months, with reports of his declining well-being surfacing periodically.
Known for his unyielding dedication to addressing the needs of his constituents, his absence in active parliamentary duties has sparked widespread worry among the people of Kawempe North and beyond.
The news of his condition has prompted an outpouring of messages from fellow legislators, civil society leaders, and members of the public, with many taking to social media to express their concern and solidarity. Several religious and community leaders have also joined the call for prayers.
Muhammad Ssegirinya, often affectionately referred to as “Mr. Updates” for his frequent social media engagement with his constituents, has been a vocal advocate for improved healthcare and social services in Uganda.
His illness has cast a somber mood across the political and civic landscape, with many reflecting on the importance of supporting public servants who dedicate their lives to the community.
As the situation develops, Rubaga Hospital has assured the public that updates will be provided in due course.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ssenyonyi reiterated the need for compassion and unity during this trying time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Hon. Ssegirinya, his family, and all those who love and care for him. Let us keep faith and hope alive,” he said.
