The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled for 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will be postponed to August 2025.
The decision follows recommendations from CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been closely monitoring progress in the three host nations.
While significant advancements have been made in the construction and renovation of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other essential facilities, additional time is required to meet CAF’s high standards for hosting the event.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed appreciation for the efforts of the leaders of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in driving the preparations forward.
“I would like to express my deep gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership and commitment. I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of football infrastructure and facilities in these countries,” Dr. Motsepe stated.
Despite the delay, Dr. Motsepe remains confident in the region’s ability to host a world-class tournament. “The stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will meet CAF standards for hosting a very successful CHAN in August 2025,” he said.
In the lead-up to the tournament, CAF will hold the official draw for the CHAN competition today, January 15, 2025, in Nairobi at 8:00 PM local time.
Details about the exact tournament start date in August 2025 will be announced later.
This postponement marks an opportunity for the East African nations to fine-tune their preparations and ensure the infrastructure is ready to deliver an exceptional football event for players, fans, and the continent.
