The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has made significant strides in the General Update of the National Voters Register, which commenced on January 20, 2025.
According to Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, EC Chairperson, the exercise is progressing smoothly, with a notable increase in the number of citizens registering and verifying their details.
The EC aims to enhance the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register through this exercise. Ugandan citizens aged 18 and above can register as voters at their parish of residence or origin. Additionally, registered voters can transfer their voting locations by providing proof of residency or origin in the new voting parish.
The verification and correction of details on the Voters Register are also ongoing. Registered voters can check and correct their details at update centers or online.
Furthermore, students registered under NIRA’s learners project who have turned 18 can present their National Identification Numbers (NIN) for polling station assignment. The exercise also includes updating registers for National Youths, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Older Persons.
Despite initial challenges, including insufficient registration kits and aging equipment, the EC has implemented measures to ensure adequate coverage and technical support. Justice Byabakama acknowledged these challenges but emphasized that the commission has made significant progress in addressing them.
The EC Chairperson commended stakeholders for their support in mobilizing communities and reiterated the commission’s commitment to compiling a credible and clean National Voters Register. With the exercise set to conclude on February 10, 2025, the EC is confident that it will achieve its objectives and lay the groundwork for successful 2025/2026 General Elections.
In addition to the voter registration update, the EC also announced preparations for parliamentary and local council by-elections in Kawempe Division North, following the death of Hon. Ssegirinya Muhammad on January 9, 2025. The detailed program for these by-elections will be shared with stakeholders on January 27, 2025.
