The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Busitema University and Ndejje University to enhance research, training, and resource-sharing in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
The agreements, signed at NARO headquarters in Entebbe, aim to provide university students with hands-on experiences in agricultural research and innovation. NARO Director General, Dr. Yona Baguma, formalized the collaboration alongside Prof. Olivia Nassaka Banja, Vice Chancellor of Ndejje University, and Rev. Can. Prof. Paul Waako, Vice Chancellor of Busitema University.
“These agreements will enable us to leverage our combined expertise and infrastructure to enhance research and training, which are critical for the socio-economic transformation of Uganda,” said Dr. Baguma. “Collaboration with academia is vital in developing solutions that address real-world agricultural challenges.”
Under the MoUs, the institutions will jointly undertake research and innovation projects, facilitate student training and supervision, and engage in staff exchange programs. The partnerships also focus on technology transfer, community outreach, and securing research funding.
Prof. Waako described the agreement as a strategic move for Busitema University, emphasizing that the partnership would provide students with exposure to advanced agricultural technologies.
Prof. Nassaka echoed similar sentiments, stating that the collaboration would enrich research and innovation opportunities for both faculty and students.
Senior officials from NARO, including Dr. Swidiq Mugerwa, Dr. Sadik Kassim, Dr. Kisaka Stevens, and Mr. Julius Tegiike, attended the signing ceremony.
The MoUs take immediate effect, with the partners set to develop implementation plans and conduct regular progress reviews.
This initiative aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040, aiming to transform the agricultural sector into a knowledge-based, market-oriented industry.
