The Deputy Commander of Land Forces, Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, has urged Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops to maintain discipline and uphold the army’s image while on deployment in Somalia.
“Discipline, commitment, and maintaining the UPDF’s image will see you through this mission,” said Maj Gen Takirwa during the flag-off ceremony of Battle Group 43 and United Nations Guard Unit 11 that will be deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU), at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Singo, Nakaseke District.
He emphasised the importance of proper conduct and cooperation with local communities in ensuring mission success.
“Respect Somali culture,” he reminded the troops, cautioning them against causing any further distress to the people of Somalia.
He advised the troops to respect one another while on deployment in Somalia.
Col Julius Nyendwoha, the Chief Instructor at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSTC) Singo on behalf of the Commandant expressed confidence in the troops’ readiness.
“I am convinced that the objectives of the training have been achieved and that you are prepared for operations in the mission area,” Col Nyendwoha stated.
He highlighted that the training was conducted by UPDF instructors with support and mentorship from international partners, including the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).
