As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, the Africa Youth Congress (AYC) has thrown its weight behind Rebecca Kadaga, endorsing her for a more significant leadership role in the country.
The youth organisation, which brings together young leaders advocating for governance reforms and development, has called for Kadaga to be elevated beyond her current position as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Affairs.
Speaking during an AYC workshop at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Saturday, AYC chairperson Rodgers Kalema emphasized Kadaga’s long-standing commitment to public service, good governance, and the fight against corruption.
Kalema called on the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to consider Kadaga for the office of Prime Minister, arguing that her leadership would strengthen government inclusivity and efficiency.
“For years, Mama Kadaga has championed the fight for youth inclusion, women’s empowerment, and the economic development of this country,” Kalema said. “She has been a pillar in the government, and we believe her leadership as Prime Minister would ensure continuity in fighting corruption, promoting regional integration, and securing economic opportunities for young people.”
The endorsement comes amid internal NRM preparations for the 2026 elections, with the party currently updating its voter register.
While Kadaga has remained silent on her future political aspirations, youth leaders argue that her track record makes her the ideal candidate for Uganda’s Prime Ministership.
Kadaga’s Legacy and Future Leadership
Kadaga has been a formidable force in Ugandan politics, serving as Speaker of Parliament for a decade before transitioning into her current cabinet role.
Her leadership in both national and regional affairs, particularly in advancing East African integration, has earned her praise from various political and civic groups.
Emmanuel Clark Tulengera, AYC’s secretary for external affairs, commended Kadaga’s efforts in promoting East Africa’s economic and political integration.
“Kadaga has played a key role in ensuring that Uganda remains at the forefront of regional cooperation. Her leadership as Prime Minister would further strengthen our ties with neighboring countries and create more opportunities for Ugandans,” he stated.
Beyond her role in governance, Kadaga has also been a staunch advocate for social justice, having pushed for policies that uplift women, youth, and marginalized communities.
Youth leaders argue that her elevation to Prime Minister would consolidate these efforts, ensuring that key national policies are executed effectively.
A Call for Leadership Stability
In addition to endorsing Kadaga, AYC reaffirmed its support for President Yoweri Museveni’s bid for re-election, citing his role in maintaining national security and economic stability.
Kalema emphasized that both Museveni and Kadaga’s leadership would be crucial in steering Uganda through the next phase of its development.
“The country has enjoyed peace for decades under Museveni’s leadership, and with Kadaga as Prime Minister, we are confident that governance will become even more transparent and youth-friendly,” Kalema said.
The endorsement highlights growing youth engagement in Uganda’s political landscape, as young leaders push for experienced and reform-driven leadership ahead of the 2026 elections.
While Kadaga has yet to publicly declare her interest in the Prime Ministership, the call from AYC signals a strong desire for her increased leadership in Uganda’s political future.
