President Museveni has appointed Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor of the Bank of Uganda (BoU). Dr. Atingi-Ego previously served as the Deputy Governor of the central bank.
The governor’s position became vacant in 2022 following the passing of Dr. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, who died in a hospital in Kenya. In addition to Dr. Atingi-Ego’s appointment, President Museveni also named Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba as the new Deputy Governor of BoU on Monday.
Dr. Atingi-Ego has a robust background in economic policy, having previously held the role of Executive Director of Macroeconomics and Financial Management at the Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa in Harare, Zimbabwe. He also served as Executive Director in charge of research at BoU before his tenure at the institute.
His career includes a significant stint at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2008, where he worked as Deputy Director of the African Department. Dr. Atingi-Ego began his career at the Bank of Uganda, gradually rising through the ranks to become the Executive Director of Research.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Makerere University and pursued postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, earning a master’s degree from Cardiff Business School, University of Wales, and a PhD from Liverpool University. Dr. Atingi-Ego was appointed Deputy Governor of BoU in 2020 before his recent promotion to governor.
