Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye, the opposition leader charged with treason, has formally applied for bail before the International Crimes Division of the High Court.
Besigye, citing his advanced age and the harsh conditions of his detention at Luzira Prison, emphasized that his well-being has worsened since his remand following his arrest in November 2024.
In his bail application, Besigye listed several grounds, including his permanent place of abode, his willingness to comply with all reasonable conditions set for his admittance to bail, and his commitment to respecting all terms that the court may deem necessary while granting him bail.
Besigye, who has been a vocal critic of the government, has been charged alongside Hajji Obeid Lutale and Captain Dennis Oola with treason and misprision of treason. The prosecution alleges that they conspired to commit treason between 2023 and November 2024.
The High Court is expected to fix a date for the bail hearing soon. Besigye’s application comes after he was remanded to Luzira Prison last week, sparking concerns about his health and well-being due to the harsh prison conditions.
