Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has threatened to take legal action against comedian and Comedy Store boss Alex Muhangi over alleged copyright and neighboring rights infringement.
Through his legal team, R.S.K Associates, Bebe Cool issued a formal letter to Muhangi accusing him of unlawfully distributing and broadcasting his performances on various platforms, including NTV Uganda and YouTube, without permission or payment.
The letter outlines several demands, including the immediate removal of all infringing content from Muhangi’s platforms and a halt to any further broadcasts of Bebe Cool’s performances for commercial gain.
Bebe Cool is seeking over Ugx 579 million in damages for the unauthorized use of his work, as well as a detailed report of all revenue generated from the infringement. Muhangi has been given 14 days to comply, after which Bebe Cool’s legal team will take further action if necessary.
The fallout between Bebe Cool and Muhangi has been making headlines, and this latest development raises questions about copyright laws and intellectual property rights in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
