Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Obeid Lutale, and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) captain Denis Oola appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court this morning, where the state sought to have them committed to the High Court for trial.
The trio has been in detention since November 16, 2024, facing treason charges.
During today’s court session, the prosecution informed the magistrate that investigations were still ongoing but insisted that the case should be forwarded to the High Court for trial.
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and longtime critic of the government, has faced multiple arrests in the past over his political activities.
His latest legal battle has drawn attention from opposition supporters and human rights activists, who continue to demand his release.
The court has yet to determine whether to grant the state’s request for trial at the High Court. Meanwhile, the accused remain in custody as the legal process unfolds.
